Just SEW You Know
Sewing School for Kids, Teens & Adults
Parent/Student Info
1.  Winter/Spring 2010 session begins Tuesday, January 5th and ends Friday, May 21st.   We follow the Gwinnett County school calendar and will be closed on the same days they are.  Please see the complete schedule of when your class will meet and mark your calendars accordingly.    Class Schedule

2.  Signing up for any session (Fall or Winter/Spring), you are committing to the full session.  If you must stop lessons, we ask for a 30 day advance notice to allow sufficient time to fill your spot.

3.  If you will miss a class, please let us know as far in advance as possible with a phone call or email.  Make-ups are offered to those who miss due to illness.  Sorry, but make-ups are not offered for missing a class due to other reasons such as out-of town, other plans etc..

4.  Tuition payment is due the 1st class of each month.  A reminder tag will be placed on your student's sewing bag during the lesson the week before hand.  You do not need to mail payment, just send your check payable to Karen Krug with your student to class the
week it is due.

5.   Tuition for May 2010 will be due with the April payment.  This prevents a sudden drop in enrollment for the month of May and allows us to still cover our sewing school expenses through the end of the Winter/Spring session.

6.  Your workbook/pattern packet (paid for at registration) is for beginner sewers.  There are 4 more workbooks in the Kids Can Sew & Fashion Design series that can be purchased as your student learns and feels ready to move on to more challenging projects.  A copy of all workbooks are available for your viewing in the classroom and if you should choose to purchase one, we will place an order and hopefully have it for you within one or two lessons.

7.  A prepared student is a ready-to-learn student!  Please ask your child if she knows what she will be doing at the next class BEFORE that upcoming lesson.   A trip to JoAnn's or Hobby Lobby may be in order.   We have a large scrap bin that students are welcome to work out of, so if getting to the store before the next lesson just doesn't happen, no worries!   We keep some items on hand here that students can use but are expected to replace (zippers, poly-fil, velcro, purse handles, buttons etc...).

8.  Remember.... your child is learning how to sew.   Her stitches likely won't be perfect, outfits or other projects may not  be up to the high standards you'd expect from store bought items!  In her eyes, however, she is thrilled and extremely proud of what she has made and that boost of self-esteem is priceless!   Please support her, as we do in the classroom,  in every way possible with words of encouragement!

9.  Students will be most receptive to learning and will be happiest if they are working on the projects they want to work on with fabric they chose at the fabric store.   Not all students enjoy making clothing and some students only want to make clothes.  We offer dozens of patterns for  all sorts of sewing
projects and we encourage variety to keep the enthusiasm high.    If ever you are concerned about what your daughter is sewing in class (such as too many pillows!), please let us know.

10.  Beginners:  Please no stripe or plaid fabric and choose cotton or flannel fabrics as they are the easiest to learn to sew on.

11.  Please purchase only good quality thread.  Coats & Clark All Purpose works very well and is available in every color imaginable.   Dollar bin thread or thread from Grandma's old sewing box is typically fuzzy making it hard to thread through the needle and often breaks in the machine.

12.  Coupons are essential to controlling costs!  Go to http://www.joann.com/ and sign up for their mail list.   You will receive huge money saving coupons in the mail and on-line as well as advance notice of specials so you can plan your shopping.   Also, the Sunday AJC has a Joann ad with a coupon.  If you don't get the paper, ask a neighbor for their Joann ad.  One other place to find great coupons is on the back cover of Joann's "Fashionfusion" magazine located on top of the pattern drawers in the pattern section of the store.   You do not have to ever pay retail at a Joann store!

13.  Hobby Lobby and Walmart carry fabric.   Hobby Lobby's coupon is more challenging to get - 1st try on-line at http://hobbylobby.com/.  They also run a small ad with a coupon in the AJC during the week buried deep in the news print.  The same ad appears on their web site minus the coupon.

14.  Sewing class is the 1 hour a week your daughter will be able to escape all the pressures in her life and be able to relax and enjoy learning a life skill in a fun & inviting atmosphere.  In time, your daughter's class will feel like a "Sewing Bee" as her fellow students bond over their common sewing interest.   It's guaranteed fun!
